Hyrox Training in College Station: Why CrossFit Is the Best Preparation
Hyrox is everywhere right now. If you follow fitness on social media, you have seen it. If you have friends who race, they have told you about it. And if you live in College Station, you are probably wondering where to train for one.
Here is what most people do not realize: if you are doing CrossFit, you are already training for Hyrox. Every class. Every day.
What Is Hyrox?
Hyrox is a fitness race. Eight 1 km runs, each followed by a functional workout station. You complete them in order, and your time is your score. The format is the same everywhere in the world, whether you race in Houston, Dallas, New York, or Berlin.
The 8 stations are:
- SkiErg (1,000 m)
- Sled Push (50 m)
- Sled Pull (50 m)
- Burpee Broad Jumps (80 m)
- Rowing (1,000 m)
- Farmers Carry (200 m)
- Sandbag Lunges (100 m)
- Wall Balls (75-100 reps)
The average finish time is about 90 minutes. There is no time limit. You go until you are done.
Why CrossFit Is the Best Hyrox Training
Look at that station list again. SkiErg. Rowing. Sled pushes. Wall balls. Farmers carries. Lunges. Burpees.
If you have been doing CrossFit for more than a few weeks, you have done all of these. They are not exotic movements. They are Tuesday at CrossFit Aggieland.
What makes CrossFit particularly effective for Hyrox is not just that we train the movements. It is that we train the capacity. Hyrox is not about how strong you are at any single station. It is about how well you can perform when you are already tired from the station before it. That is work capacity under fatigue, and it is exactly what CrossFit builds.
Every class at CrossFit Aggieland follows Mayhem programming. That means you are getting a structured mix of strength, conditioning, and metabolic work that builds real fitness. Not just good-looking muscles. Functional, usable, race-day fitness.
The Equipment You Need Is Already Here
One of the biggest barriers to Hyrox training is finding a gym with the right equipment. Most commercial gyms do not have SkiErgs, heavy sleds, or Concept2 rowers. We have all of them.
At CrossFit Aggieland, we have:
- SkiErgs for pulling endurance
- Heavy sleds for push and pull training
- Concept2 rowers in every class
- Wall balls in 14 lb and 20 lb
- Sandbags for loaded lunges
- Farmers carry handles and heavy dumbbells
- Open floor space for running drills and burpee broad jumps
You do not need to buy your own equipment or find a specialty Hyrox gym. You need a gym that already trains this way. That is us.
How Long Does It Take to Get Hyrox Ready?
If you are starting from zero, plan on 8 to 12 weeks of consistent training. Three to five classes per week will build the base you need.
If you are already doing CrossFit? You are closer than you think. Most CrossFit athletes who sign up for their first Hyrox are surprised at how prepared they already feel. The running is the part that usually needs the most attention, because CrossFit classes do not typically include long runs. Adding two to three 5 km runs per week outside of class will round out your preparation.
Hyrox Divisions for Every Level
Hyrox is not just for elite athletes. They offer multiple divisions:
- Open is the standard race. Challenging but accessible for anyone who trains consistently.
- Pro uses heavier weights for experienced athletes.
- Doubles lets you race with a partner. You run together and split the stations.
- Relay is a team of four. Each person does two runs and two stations.
Whether you want to compete hard or just finish your first one, there is a division for you.
